Silvopastoral systems have been increasingly adopted in Brazil, often supported by public policies, such as the federal government's ''Low Carbon Agriculture'' program. These systems integrate diversification, income generation and environmental protection. However, predation of mature trees by cattle can be a problem, causing large economic losses. As the causes of this predation are not precisely known, few alternatives are available to prevent or reduce damages. The present study aimed to evaluate the vulnerability of Eucalyptus grandis, E. saligna, E. pellita, E. dunni, E. urophylla, E. urograndis (clones I144, I224, C219 and H13) and the clone COP 1277, an E. grandis 9 E. camaldulensis hybrid, to predation by cattle. Damages caused by chewing leaves and bark and breaking branches and trunks were evaluated in a silvopastoral system comprised of Brachiaria decumbens, cattle and Eucalyptus spp. The cattle showed a marked selection of E. grandis and E. urograndis I144 clone. The eucalyptus types least prone to damage were E. pellita and E. urograndis H13 clone.

*Autor para correspondência RESUMO. Além da crescente demanda por leite e derivados, recentemente a população tem dado maior importância a temas como sustentabilidade e bem estar animal. Sendo assim, os produtores estão se adequando às exigências do mercado consumidor através de sistemas para produzir de forma sustentável e com qualidade de vida aos animais, além de serem eficientes economicamente. O sistema silvipastoril permite combinar atividades silviculturais e pecuárias, e assim aumentar a eficiência produtiva. Dentre os principais benefícios deste sistema produtivo estão a conservação do solo e dos recursos hídricos, a promoção do sequestro de carbono e o aumento da biodiversidade. Além destes, os animais criados neste sistema possuem menor risco de estresse térmico, devido à sombra advinda da arborização, favorecendo o bem estar animal. Portanto, o sistema silvipastoril representa uma alternativa adequada à produção de bovinos leiteiros, uma vez que vacas em lactação necessitam de condições climáticas ideais para expressarem seu potencial genético, resultando em alto desempenho produtivo. Contudo, este estudo objetiva obter uma melhor compreensão sobre a criação de bovinos leiteiros em sistema silvipastoril e sobre a influência em seu bem estar.Palavras chave: Arborização, bovinocultura de leite, sistema de produção, sombra Welfare of dairy cattle in silvipastoral systemABSTRACT. In addition to the growing demand for dairy products, recently the population has given greater importance to issues such as sustainability and animal welfare. Thus, producers are adapting to the demands of the consumer market through systems to produce sustainably and quality of life for animals, besides being economically efficient. The silvipastoral system allows combining forestry and livestock activities, and so increasing production efficiency. Among the main benefits of this production system are soil conservation and water resources, the promotion of carbon sequestration and increased biodiversity. In addition, animals raised in this system have a lower risk of thermal stress due to shadow arising from afforestation, favoring animal welfare. Therefore, the silvipastoral system represents a suitable alternative to the production of dairy cattle, once lactating cows need ideal climatic conditions to express their genetic potential, resulting in high production performance. In this way, this study aims to gain a better understanding on the establishment of dairy cattle in silvipastoral system and the influence on their welfare.

Silvicultural performance of eucaliptus and animal behavior in a silvopastoral system

Silvopastoral system, in which trees and forage species are grown in the same area together with animals, has emerged as a sustainable alternative of agricultural production systems. However, information on different silvicultural arrangements and combinations of forest, animal and grazing components in this system are still scarce. Thus, this study followed the silvicultural performance of the forest component (Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis, eucalyptus hybrid, clone I-144) under different population arrangements in a silvopastoral system through periodic dendrometric evaluations and determined the impact of animal component (Nellore females) on tree development and ingestive behavior of animals subjected to rotational grazing in Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu. The study was conducted at Agropecuária Ouro Branco, located in Bandeirantes, MS, Brazil. Total height, diameter at breast height, and wood volume per hectare were evaluated in three-and five-row ranks. To indicate plant growth, the current and average annual increments were calculated. Animal behavior was evaluated based on the periodic observation of 15 animals randomly selected in the lot. The initial performance of forest component was satisfactory in both populations, but growth indicators indicated greater current and average annual increments in the five-row rank. The presence of forest component does not interfere with the ingestive behavior and wellbeing of animals in the silvopastoral system, as well as, the presence of animal component does not interfere in the plants silvicultural development.
