Cytotoxic and Antiplasmodial Compounds from the Roots of Strophioblachia fimbricalyx

Abstract: The known phenanthrenone trigonostemone (1), along with a new phenanthrenone, 9-O-demethyltrigonostemone (2), and two new phenanthropolones, 3,6,9-trimethoxyphenanthropolone (3) and 4,6,9-trimethoxyphenanthropolone (4), were isolated from the roots of Strophioblachia fimbricalyx. Compound 2 showed cytotoxicity against NCI-H187, KB, and MCF7 cancer cells with IC50 values of 0.8, 0.8, and 2.9 microg/mL, respectively, while 3 and 4 showed reduced cytotoxicity. Compounds 2 and 3 displayed antiplasmodial activity i… Show more

“…A new phenanthrenone, 9-O-demethyltrigonostemone (37), and a new phenanthropolone (38) were isolated from the roots of Strophioblachia fimbricalyx Boerl. (Euphorbiaceae) and displayed antiplasmodial activity (IC 50 values of 8.7 and 9.9 µM, respectively) against K1 [25]. Fractionation of the ethyl acetate extract of Carpesium cernuum L. (Asteraceae) yielded four characterised sesquiterpenoid lactones among which 11(13)-dehydroivaxillin (57) and 11-epi-ivaxillin (58) exhibited antiplasmodial activity against D10 with IC 50 values of 2.0 and 9.3 µM [34].…”

“…As shown in Fig. 3a , compound 2 , 9-O-demethyltrigonostemone, was isolated from the roots of Trigonostemon chinensis and has been reported to show cytotoxicity in multiple types of cancer cells [ 24 ]. Compound 7 is shikonin from Radix Arnebiae and was reported to possess anti-inflammatory activity [ 25 ].…”
