Cysticercosis of masseter

Abstract: Cysticercosis is a parasitic infestation caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium, a cestodic paratise. It is a common disease in developing countries where it is also endemic. The most commonly infested body organs include subcutaneous tissues, brain and skeletal muscles. It is interesting to note that oral lesion of cysticercosis is a rare event. Here we report an isolated lesion of cysticercosis in the masseter muscle.

“…Similar isolated cyst has been reported in literature in biceps, triceps and masseter muscle, but they were diagnosed after surgical excision. 9,10 Use of steroids along with the antihelminthic treatment has been recommended for disseminated cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis where there is extensive release of parasitic antigen from dying parasite. But in isolated lesion, only Albendazole therapy is enough.…”

“…Human beings serve either as a definitive or an intermediate host of the adult tapeworm [6]. Consumption of inadequately cooked pork is the primary cause as pigs serve as normal intermediate host but it can also result from ingestion of tapeworm eggs through contaminated food, water or dirty hands.…”

“…Praziquantel and albendazole are the two recommended antiheliminthic drugs for the treatment of cysticercosis [8]. Surgical excision is recommended for ventricular, ocular, spinal and symptomatic subcutaneous cyst [6] as well defined capsule permits complete excision with unlikely chance of recurrence.…”

“…[1] Among the unusual form of clinical manifestation, there are very few case reports of isolated muscular cysticercosis and, to the best of our knowledge, hepatic cysticercosis has been reported only thrice before in medical literature. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Case Report A 14-year-old boy was having intermittent type of fever in the range of 102-103° F along with headache for 3 weeks. Within 1 week of development of fever, he developed multiple superficial and deep swellings over the front of the chest, trunk, buttocks, and thigh.…”
