Cyclodextrins in delivery systems: Applications

Abstract: Cyclodextrins (CDs) are a family of cyclic oligosaccharides with a hydrophilic outer surface and a lipophilic central cavity. CD molecules are relatively large with a number of hydrogen donors and acceptors and, thus in general, they do not permeate lipophilic membranes. In the pharmaceutical industry, CDs have mainly been used as complexing agents to increase aqueous solubility of poorly soluble drugs and to increase their bioavailability and stability. CDs are used in pharmaceutical applications for numerous… Show more

“…In addition to the human GI tract, local irritation can also occur for transdermal and ocular drug delivery systems. Depending on the cause of the local irritation, different approaches such as DR, complexation with CD, microsphere, and drug-device combination have been applied to reduce local irritation (108)(109)(110). However, there are still many reports of drug-related local irritation.…”

“…Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is one of the desirable polymers that can provide these features; it is capable of ultrafast dissolution. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are c y c l i c o l i g o s a c c h a r i d e s c o n s i s t i n g o f 1 , 4 -l i n k e d glucopyranoside units having either six, seven, or eight glucose units arranged in a cyclic structure with a hydrophilic outer surface and a lipophilic central cavity which suit for a variety of lipophilic drugs (17,18). Because the physicochemical properties of incorporated compounds can be oriented by complexation with CDs, the CDs are employed in many application fields, such as pharmaceuticals, foods, cosmetics, home/personal care, textiles, and so on (18,19).…”

“…The resulting complex hides most of the hydrophobic functionality in its interior cavity, while the hydrophilic hydroxyl groups get exposed to the environment [7]. Also, the bitter taste of substances can be reduced or even completely eliminated if they form inclusion complexes of sufficient stability with the selected cyclodextrin [8].…”
