Formulation Development of Mouth Dissolving Film of Etoricoxib for Pain Management

Abstract: Etoricoxib is a potent, orally active, and highly selective COX-2 inhibitor that exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activities. The present research was undertaken to develop mouth dissolving films of etoricoxib to have rapid onset of action. Mouth dissolving film (MDF) is a better alternate to oral disintegrating tablets due to its novelty, ease of use, and the consequent patient compliance. Solubility enhancement and taste masking of etoricoxib were the two challenges solved by formulatin… Show more

“…Then they were incubated at 37°C under continuous stirring (PHMP-100thermoshaker, Grant Instruments). In vitro disintegration time is generally measured when films started to break or swell and the dissolution time is measured when they completely dissolve in the medium (27,28). The experiment was carried out in triplicate for each different film composition.…”

“…Orodispersible films (ODFs) are flexible, thin polymeric dosage forms offering, among other advantages, rapid disintegration in the mouth and fast release of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). Several ODF formulations have made their appearance on the market during the past decade, and many others have been optimised by academic research groups aiming to achieve specific therapeutic performances 1,2 and meet the needs of diverse patient groups Methodologies such as petri dish, and drop/slide frame were proposed by several research groups 5,13,14 and extensively reviewed by others 12,15 however currently a consensus on a standard disintegration methodology for orodispersible formulations has not yet been reached.…”
