Cyclic fatigue of NiTi instruments used in complex curvatures with continuous or reciprocating rotation

Abstract: Aim: The aim of present study was to compare cyclic fatigue resistance of Twisted files (TF, Sybron Endo, Glendora, CA) instrument used with continuous rotation and the new Motion (TFAdaptive rotating reciprocation), to evaluate if the new reciprocating motion could affect the lifespan of tested instruments. Methodology: 30 new TF instruments were submitted to cyclic fatigue tests. Group 1 instruments were tested using a TFA motion (TFA) while group 2 instruments were used in continuous rotation at 500 rpm (CR… Show more

“…Cyclic fatigue arises after a metal is exposed to frequent cycles of tension and pressure and this initiates the breakdown of its structure, leading to fracture [7]. Cyclic fatigue occurs more often in a canal with an acute curve and a small radius of curvature [8], and it is the main reason for separation of NiTi instruments [9]. The cyclic fatigue resistance of NiTi rotary files has been examined using fixed models because they provide standardized situations for each tested instrument [10].…”

“…Numerous studies on the cyclic fatigue characteristics of different rotary NiTi instruments such as NiTi endodontic files have also been conducted over the years. 129,[187][188][189][190][191][192][193][194][195][196] The results suggest that NiTi endodontic files that operate using reciprocal motion show better cyclic fatigue failure resistance, even though the influence of other factors cannot be ruled out. Future research on the development of SMA devices of similar geometries should aim to reach a compromise between the improvement of fatigue life and the complete utilization of the martensite transformation.…”

“…However, there is no agreement in the literature regarding the influence of instrument design on the behavior of instruments under cyclic fatigue. [43][44][45][46][47] Testarelli et al 48 compared cyclic fatigue resistance of instrument used with continuous rotation and the new motion (TF Adaptive rotating reciprocation). The results showed a significant increase of cyclic fatigue resistance of instruments used with the TFA motion.…”
