Cutaneous and Nasal Protothecosis in a Goat

Abstract: Abstract. A case of protothecosis is reported in an adult goat with inspiratory dyspnea and stertor. Dermatitis with prominent ulcerated nodules up to 3 cm in diameter was observed in the muzzle at the mucocutaneous junctions of nasal and lip skin, and in the border of the pinna. Histologic lesions were necrotizing pyogranulomatous dermatitis and rhinitis with myriads of walled sporangia, characteristic of Prototheca wickerhamii. This seems to be the first report of protothecosis in a goat.

“…In cattle the algae cause clinical and subclinical mastitis refractory to treatment, with high economic losses and potential risk to public health; systemic forms are rare (Marques et al, 2006). In dogs and cats it can present both as localized cutaneous and systemic forms (Ginel et al, 1997;Dillberger et al, 1988;Krohne, 2000); respiratory and cutaneous forms have also been reported in the goat (Macedo et al, 2008). Systemic protothecosis involving the eye and the CNS have been reported in dogs (Stenner et al, 2007); in our case only cerebral lesions were found.…”

The last two are considered pathogenic to dogs (TSUJI et al, 2006;SIQUEIRA et al, 2008).…”
