The purpose of this work is to estimate the costs associated with managing patients with MS in Panama and evaluating the impact of the disease on their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Multicentric observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study. The costs were estimated from societal and patient perspectives and expressed in USD, 2015. The focus of the study is based on prevalence and on a “bottom-up” approach. To estimate the total cost per patient, annual reported use for each resource was multiplied by its unit cost. To evaluate HRQoL, patients completed the EQ-5D-3L questionnaire. 108 patients took part in the study. 82.41% were women with 44.78 (SD: 12.27) years. 61.11% presented mild (EDSS = 0–3.5), 25.93% moderate (EDSS = 3.5–6) and 12.96%, severe disability (EDSS≥6.5). The mean annual cost from the patient’s perspective was estimated at 777.99 USD (SD: 1,741.45) per patient. The mean cost from a societal perspective was estimated at 23,803.21 USD (SD: 13,331.83) per patient. Disease-modifying therapies (DMT) accounted for the main component of the cost. A deterioration in HRQoL was observed as the disease advances and as disability increases, with mobility and usual activities being the areas most affected by its progression. From both perspective, the cost per MS patient in Panama is high. In addition to the high economic impact, MS also exerts a negative impact on patient HRQoL, which increases as the disease advances.

Health Care Associated Infections (HAI), according to the WHO, are defined as infections contracted by a patient during treatment in a hospital or other health center and where said patient was not in the incubation period at the time of admission. Currently, they represent a highly relevant problem in Public Health, they entail high hospital mortality and morbidity rates, in addition to presenting great economic and social significance since they affect the years of life potentially lost in the population. Neonates are susceptible to IAAS and represent a greater care burden compared to other populations. The hospital environment constitutes a reservoir and a source of infection for the hospitalized patient, microorganisms that contaminate a surface can survive for days, so environmental microbiological monitoring provides retrospective information on the effectiveness of safety barriers, cleaning and disinfection processes of areas and could even evaluate people before the appearance of a series of microorganisms that increase the risk of IAAS.

Costs Related to Frontotemporal Dementia in Latin America: A Scoping Review of Economic Health Studies

Introduction: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a complex syndrome characterized by changes in behavior, language, executive control, and motor symptoms. Its annual economic burden per patient in developed countries has been classified as considerable, amounting to US$119,654 per patient, almost double the patient costs reported for Alzheimer's disease. However, there is little information regarding cost-of-illness (COI) for FTD in Latin-America (LA).Aim: To describe the costs related to FTD in LA.Methods: We included COI studies on FTD conducted in LA published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese from inception to September 2020. We carried out a systematic search in Pubmed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Scielo, Cochrane, and gray literature. For quality assessment, we used a COI assessment tool available in the literature. All costs were reported in USD for 1 year and adjusted for inflation.Results: We included three studies from Argentina, Brazil, and Peru. Direct costs (DCs) included medication (from US$959.20 to US$ 4,279.20), health care costs (from US$ 2,275.80 to US$7,856.16), and caregiver costs (from US$9,634.00 to US$28,730.28). Indirect costs (ICs) amounted to US$43,076.88.Conclusions: In LA countries, the reporting of costs related to FTD continues to be oriented toward DCs. They remain lower than in developed countries, possibly due to the limited health budget allocated. Only one Brazilian report analyzed ICs, representing the highest percentage of the total costs. Therefore, studies on the COI of this disease in LA are essential, focusing on both out-of-pocket spending and the potential economic loss to patients' homes and families.
