Custo da implantação e utilização de dois métodos de identificação de bovinos leiteiros

Abstract: Cost of the implantation and utilization of two methods of identification of dairy cattleThis study aimed to evaluate the cost of the implantation of two methods of cattle identification, namely conventional earring and electronic ear tag, in addition to discussing both the advantages and limitations of each of them. All the operational expenses concerning to the identification were recorded and, for each method, the times of holding of the animal, the implantation of the identifier, the earring reading, typin… Show more

“…For example, milk recording enables the monitoring of individual production, which ensures that cows are grouped in batches according to production, in addition to provide subsidies for culling of cows with low lactation persistence. It was observed that the use of name was the main method of animal identification in the family economy properties studied (43.5%), which may be related to the small size of the herds, since the conventional ear earring is the main method of identification in larger herds (LOPES et al, 2013). Another limiting factor for zootechnical control was the absence of routine weighing of calves, identified in 95% of the properties of this study.…”

“…As a disadvantage, electronic identification of cattle has a higher fixed cost, which highlights the need to optimize the device because these costs do not depend on the number of animals identified. The higher cost of the electronic ear tag method, due to the cost of the reading device itself, may hinder its implementation in many farms (LOPES et al, 2013b). To make the implementation of the device feasible, the technological level and the number of animals on the farm must be evaluated to ensure that the costs from using the device are justified by the optimization of labor usage.…”

“…If the reading is performed twice a year, this number decreases to 175 (Table 5). The values are lower when this method is used because, according to Lopes et al (2013b), due to some peculiarities and details of the method, it demands a greater amount of labor and time. Compared to other methods studied, the minimum numbers are 487 and 244 animals, for one and two readings per year, respectively.…”

“…Two researchers recorded the time, using two stopwatches, to decrease the chance of error. The stopwatches began timing when the cattle were led to the cattle chute, continued timing during the entire weighing procedure, and were only stopped after notes had been made in the field book and the animal had completely left the trunk, as recommended by Lopes et al (2013).…”
