BACKGROUNDSustainable wastewater management mostly implicates treatment cost, viability, and performance of an appropriate system, in addition to reuse and recycling, to meet the present social needs. In the current study, algal technology was coupled with paddy‐soaked rice mill wastewater (PSRMW) treatment to enhance the efficient treatment and economic feasibility of algal‐based eco‐friendly products. Initially, the selected microalgae, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, were cultured in raceway ponds using PSRMW as a growth medium. Then, the harvested live algal biomass was carried forward to subsequent study, after primary seedling experiments of Indian okra (Abelmoschus angulosus), which involves soil amendment treatment samples T1 (control soil – no amendment), T2 (soil + live algal biomass), and T3 (soil + chemical fertilizer).RESULTSThe maximum ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3‐N) and phosphate (PO4‐P) removal of ~70% (average yield coefficient (YN): 5.78 mg biomass mg−1 of N) and ~65% (YP: 14.13) were obtained from the phycoremediation experiments. The biochemical composition such as lipid, protein, and carbohydrate contents of harvested biomass were recorded as ~35%, ~30%, and ~9%, respectively. From the biofertilizer experiments, the maximum absolute growth rate (AGR) of 0.40 day−1 was obtained in T2 plants with better growth characteristics of chlorophyll, fresh and dry shoot, root weights (which were ~30% more than that of T3), and control soil (T1) does not exhibit the plant growth as the soil was low in nutrients.CONCLUSIONThe present study revealed the phycoremediation potential of C. pyrenoidosa in PSRMW treatment and the application of produced algal biomass as a soil amendment for the growth of A. angulosus. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI)

A urgência de inovação na matriz energética brasileira, aliada à alta geração de resíduos e efluentes agroindustriais do cenário nacional, impulsiona o uso da técnica de digestão anaeróbia como tecnologia promissora para tratamento de tais passivos ambientais e produção de biogás. A codigestão anaeróbia, digestão simultânea de dois ou mais substratos, permite vantagens operacionais e melhores condições do meio para as bactérias responsáveis pela produção do biocombustível. Desse modo, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial de produção de biogás através da codigestão de efluente (substrato) e lodo (inóculo) do Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket da Estação de Tratamento de Efluentes de uma indústria de arroz parboilizado do Sul do Brasil com dois diferentes resíduos sólidos orgânicos (cosubstrato), casca de laranja e de banana, separadamente. Um arranjo fatorial 2³ foi realizado utilizando casca de laranja como cosubstrato e outro utilizando casca de banana. Os digestores utilizados no estudo foram desenvolvidos a partir da reutilização de garrafas de Polietileno Tereftalato e operados por 168 horas à 35°C. A quantificação de biogás foi realizada através do princípio de deslocamento de fluídos. A maior produção de biogás semelhante em ambos os arranjos fatoriais se deu com 40% de efluente, 20% da solução de resíduo sólido e 30% de lodo, 8,49E-03m³ produzidos quando utilizado casca de banana e 1,17E-02m³ com casca de laranja, com remoções de DQO de 4686,87mgL-1 e 6809,92mgL-1, respectivamente.

Introduction: Removing the bran from the surface of polished rice is important for taste and palatability. However, rice washing waste water contains rich microbial nutrients, such as phosphate and nitrogen, which causes water pollution through the overgrowth of algae and bacteria. Methods: Rinse-free rice made by the bran grind (BG) method is an effective solution to this problem. The principle is to make bran aggregates by taking advantage of the adhesive properties of "hadanuka" present on the surface of white rice. There is no waste water produced in the manufacturing process, and the bran by-product can be used as fertilizer or animal feed. Results: The BG method therefore contributes to sustainable agriculture and to the prevention of water pollution. Conclusion: Currently, rinse-free rice made by the BG method accounts for more than 70% of the rinse-free rice market.
