Current Food Classifications in Epidemiological Studies Do Not Enable Solid Nutritional Recommendations for Preventing Diet-Related Chronic Diseases: The Impact of Food Processing

Abstract: To date, observational studies in nutrition have categorized foods into groups such as dairy, cereals, fruits, and vegetables. However, the strength of the association between food groups and chronic diseases is far from convincing. In most international expert surveys, risks are most commonly scored as probable, limited, or insufficient rather than convincing. In this position paper, we hypothesize that current food classifications based on botanical or animal origins can be improved to yield solid recommenda… Show more

“…To reduce these disparities, a better understanding of the types of foods purchased and consumed by each population group is needed to inform dietary guidance, interventions, or policy efforts (6)(7)(8). Scholars have proposed that future efforts may thus need a new focus on novel metrics, such as food processing (13)(14)(15)(16).…”

“…However, recent studies have increasingly been assessing the food consumption frequency and quality in adolescents and adults (12,13), and whether the foods are unprocessed, processed, or ultra-processed (14). This evidence is crucial, as nutrition-specific education programs should address both food choices and meals, and not just the required nutrients (10).…”

“…In the last decades, nutritional science and recommendations have shifted from a specific nutrient amount or energy or calorie range to a broader view of overall nutritious lifestyle that emphasizes quality and dietary patterns that promote metabolic health . Instead of focusing on the amounts of single nutrients, the focus is on the interactions of the bioactive nonnutrients present in food (ie, fibre, antioxidants, and minerals) . As a result, the relationship between nutrition and health is viewed holistically and within the context of the whole diet.…”
