Curcumin-In-Deformable Liposomes-In-Chitosan-Hydrogel as a Novel Wound Dressing

Abstract: A liposomes-in-hydrogel system as an advanced wound dressing for dermal delivery of curcumin was proposed for improved chronic wound therapy. Curcumin, a multitargeting poorly soluble active substance with known beneficial properties for improved wound healing, was incorporated in deformable liposomes to overcome its poor solubility. Chitosan hydrogel served as a vehicle providing superior wound healing properties. The novel system should assure sustained skin delivery of curcumin, and increase its retention a… Show more

“…Agrawal et al showed that the curcumin permeability in a based hydrogel based on Carbopol 940F through mouse skin was 0.67 ± 0.01 μg/cm 2 /h and the free curcumin permeability in aqueous solutions is 0.46 ± 0.02 μg/cm 2 /h [ 67 ]. Ternullo et al also obtained a curcumin permeability of 1.5 μg/cm 2 /h on human skin from a CS hydrogel with immobilized curcumin [ 68 ].…”

“…Incorporation of neutral deformable liposomes in the hydrogel promoted the high bioadhesive nature of the hydrogel. The positively charged deformable liposomes promoted the bioadhesiveness and the sustained delivery of curcumin in ex vivo full human skin [ 89 ]. Qu et al prepared hydrogel from N-carboxyethyl chitosan (CEC) and oxidized hyaluronic acid-graft-aniline tetramer.…”

“…For comparison, to reach the same vesicle size, the empty vesicles required several sonication cycles. Our targeted vesicle size was around 200 nm, which was the lower end of the optimal vesicle size range intended for dermal delivery [39]. Results are expressed as means with their respective SD (n = 3).…”
