Curcumin, Cardiometabolic Health and Dementia

Abstract: Current research indicates curcumin [diferuloylmethane; a polyphenolic compound isolated from the rhizomes of the dietary spice turmeric (Curcuma longa)] exerts a beneficial effect on health which may be partly attributable to its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this review is to examine potential mechanisms of the actions of curcumin in both animal and human studies. Curcumin modulates relevant molecular target pathways to improve glucose and lipid metabolism, suppress inflammation… Show more

“…One of the reasons could be the regular intake of turmeric in the routine diet of Indians [25]. CU is a widely studied compound, and many good reviews on its properties and applications are available in the literature [23,[26][27][28][29][30]. It was found in vitro that CU blocks the toxicity of Aβ oligomers (IC 50 = 0.8 µM) [31] and disintegrates preformed Aβ fibrils (EC 50 = 1 µM) [32].…”

“…This flowering plant, curcuma longa, belongs to the Ziangiberaceae family, and is used as an alternative medicine for arthritis [ 122 ]. Turmeric is mainly composed of three curcuminoids including curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin [ 123 ]. The three categories of curcuminoids are compared in structure.…”

“…With the phenolic O-H group, curcumin thereby belongs to the phenolic compound in structure. The antioxidant properties of curcumin can be achieved through the structure of hydroxyl groups and phenolic rings [ 123 , 124 ].…”

“…33 The possible mechanism of this effect may be due to curcumin's role in insulin secretion by activating phosphoinositide 3 kinase and insulin signaling improvement. 34 Also, aerobic training increases insulin's ability to stimulate muscle glucose uptake. 35 In the Panahi et al 36 study that used 1,000 mg curcumin supplementation over 3 months, weight and BMI in diabetic patients decreased significantly, similar to the results of this study.…”
