Objective: to identify, from the nurse perspective, situations that interfere with the availability of beds in the intensive care unit in the context of hospitalization by court order. Method: qualitative exploratory, analytical research carried out with 42 nurses working in adult intensive care. The selection took place by non-probabilistic snowball sampling. Data collected by interview and analyzed using the Discursive Textual Analysis technique. Results: three categories were analyzed, entitled deficiency of physical structure and human resources; Lack of clear policies and criteria for patient admission and inadequate discharge from the intensive care unit. In situations of hospitalization by court order, there is a change in the criteria for the allocation of intensive care beds, due to the credibility of professionals, threats of medico-legal processes by family members and judicial imposition on institutions and health professionals. Conclusion: nurses defend the needs of the patients, too, with actions that can positively impact the availability of intensive care beds and adequate care infrastructure.

Objective: to identify stimuli that interfere with the adaptation of long-lived elders at home after hospitalization in the intensive care unit and hospital discharge. Method: a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, conducted with elderly individuals who were hospitalized in the intensive care unit and were already at home after hospital discharge. Data collection took place through open interviews and was performed at the intensive care unit of the hospital and at the home of the elderly. Home visits took place between December 2017 and February 2018, and were conducted in seven cities. Bardin's content analysis was used, and the discussion was based on Callista Roy's Adaptation Theory. Ethical and legal cares were strictly respected. Results: eleven long-lived elders, aged between 80 and 94 years old, took part in the study. Two categories emerged from the participants' testimonies: Stimuli that contribute to adaptive behavioral responses in the long-lived elders and Stimuli that negatively affect the adaptation of the long-lived elders. Conclusion: the main stimuli that contributed to the adaptive behavior of the long-lived elders were the return to their homes, family support and the social support network. In contrast, the stimuli that negatively affected adaptation were fear, lack of information and difficulties in continuing the care. The critical role of the health professionals in the intensive care unit and the hospital unit in preparing longevity the long-lived elders their families for hospital discharge and home return is highlighted.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to understand, based on the Mishel’s Theory of Uncertainty in Illness and the Theory of Transitions of Meleis, in which way uncertainty in illness and the unexpected mediated the process of nurse-family communication and are translated into lived experience of the family. Method: Considering the intentionality of the research, it fits into a qualitative paradigm and a phenomenological approach, according to Van Manen. Participants were referred to as “snowball” and the data collection was performed by interview with open questions. Results: In the analysis of the data, three essential themes were identified: The antecedents of uncertainty: condition inherent to the subject; The process of assessing uncertainty: capacities and opportunities; The way to deal with uncertainty: coping strategies. Conclusion and implications for practice: Family member who lives the uncertainty has personal conditions that influence the process of appreciation and deal with uncertainty. The communication that establishes with the nurses, in particular in the search for information, will be mediated by the experience of uncertainty, in a constant unforeseen. The adaptation that is desired and demanded arises from coping strategies developed, with the nurses too, considering uncertainty a danger or an opportunity.
