“…We believe that archaeology should be used as a political force in contemporary society, and we have demonstrated that archaeology can have a social impact in society and how this became urgent during the social outburst in Chile. However, as mentioned before, there several others that have made important contributions to this field in Chile (Adams, 2002; Estefane, 2013; Márquez et al, 2020a, 2020b; Prieto and Villa, 2014; Simalchik, 2006), and we firmly believe there is an urgent need for this kind of studies, which can help victims in different healing processes and to bring social justice to different parts of society. We argue for the importance to analyse, and deal with armed conflict and contested heritage as many others have done (Breithoff, 2020; Compañy, 2009; Gastaldi, 2014; Haber, 2009).…”

“…One of the first calls to register the material culture of the events in the social outburst taking place in Chile were raised from the archaeological community in Santiago. Several archaeologists (and anthropologists) took to the streets to record the events (see, Márquez, 2020aMárquez, , 2020bMárquez et al, 2020aMárquez et al, , 2020b. Several different groups started to register the material remains in the streets with traditional archaeological methods during the first days of the curfew, and several ethnographers initiated interviews and fieldwork with different social movements.…”

“…Sites-which are currently memory sites-have been preserved as places in terms of existence and location, but they have mutated into a variety of spaces over time (De Certeau, 2000), adopting configurations, meanings, and usages according to the historical context of the country. What remains is the architecture of the monument-its materiality in the world-and the landscaping-an expression that adapts according to the dominant narratives disputed over time (Márquez et al, 2020). To explore this temporal-spatial historicity, it is possible to observe and converse with the materialities of space while also analyzing how it is used and the qualitiessuch as identity and culture-provided by the people who inhabit it (Soja, 2008).…”
