“…Cryptosporidium parvum is a common protozoan that has been found as an emerging infectious threat, especially in immunocompromised hosts (14,15,18,22) . It can cause acute or chronic, self limited watery diarrhea in immunocompetent hosts, but severe and prolonged diarrhea, often ending in death in AIDS patients (8,9,11) .…”

“…It can cause acute or chronic, self limited watery diarrhea in immunocompetent hosts, but severe and prolonged diarrhea, often ending in death in AIDS patients (8,9,11) . The ileal mucosa is the center of cryptosporidium colonization (18,22) but it may spread throughout the gastrointestinal tract, especially in immunocompromised hosts (6,12,15) . Involvement of the upper gastrointestinal tract has been detected with increasing frequency (2,5,10,16) .…”

“…Both the parasites have been recognized as a cause of GI illness in immuno-competent as well as in immuno-deficient persons that results in diarrhea of varying frequencies (Current et al 1983). The infection in immuno-competent individuals is self-limited though intermittent intestinal discomfort-ness may be experienced, whereas it can be unrelenting and fatal in immuno-compromised individuals unless treated properly (Current and Gracia 1991;Navin and Juranek 1984). Massive out-breaks caused by the two coccidian parasites have been reported in general population, particularly in persons from the United States (Brown and Rotschafer 1999;MacKenzie et al 1994).…”
