Cruise spillovers to hotels and restaurants

Abstract: The rapid growth of cruise tourism has spurred a debate on about spillover effects on other sectors in the port destination. In this study, we investigate the effect of cruise tourism on the demand for hotels, restaurants and cafés. We estimate a demand function for this sector applying a spatial autocorrelation regression model using panel data from Norway. The results show positive, albeit modest, demand spillover effects of cruise tourism to these onshore businesses. Policy implications and limitations of t… Show more

“…Previous studies also have identified a spatial correlation between tourism building investments and tourist revenues, the flow of tourist capital and labor and tourism-related economic growth, as well as local tourism development patterns (e.g., hotel infrastructure, tourism resource endowments) and regional tourism growth [17,29]. It has also been found that the growth of cruise tourism has a spillover effect on other tourism sectors, such as hotels and restaurants [30].…”

“…The rapid tourism growth in Nordic countries can be seen from the hotel guest nights shown in Figure 1 and the increase in cruise ship activity (e.g. Skrede and Tveteraas, 2019). However, in contrast to the international trend described by Song et al (2012), the stock of publications in tourism economics research in the Nordic countries was relatively low until recent years.…”

“…The SAR model focusses on the interaction between dependent variables, while the SEM estimates the effect of spatial interaction between perturbances (Wang et al, 2019). SAR models have been used in the hotel industry to determine the effects of agglomeration on hotel and restaurant demand (Skrede and Tveteraas, 2019), hotel location choices (Kalnins and Chung, 2004), hotel prices (Balaguer and Pern ıas, 2013) and labour productivity (Kim, 2020).…”
