a b s t r a c tReliable predictions of light charged particle production in spallation reactions are important to correctly assess gas production in spallation targets. In particular, the helium production yield is important for assessing damage in the window separating the accelerator vacuum from a spallation target, and tritium is a major contributor to the target radioactivity. Up to now, the models available in the MCNPX transport code, including the widely used default option Bertini-Dresner and the INCL4.2-ABLA combination of models, were not able to correctly predict light charged particle yields. The work done recently on both the intranuclear cascade model INCL4, in which cluster emission through a coalescence process has been introduced, and on the de-excitation model ABLA allows correcting these deficiencies. This paper shows that the coalescence emission plays an important role in the tritium and 3 He production and that the combination of the newly developed versions of the codes, INCL4.5-ABLA07, now lead to good predictions of both helium and tritium cross-sections over a wide incident energy range. Comparisons with other available models are also presented.

A description of the IntraNuclear Cascade (INC), preequilibrium, evaporation, fission, coalescence, and Fermi breakup models used by the latest versions of our CEM03.03 and LAQGSM03.03 event generators is presented, with a focus on our most recent developments of these models. The recently developed "S" and "G" versions of our codes, that consider multifragmentation of nuclei formed after the preequilibrium stage of reactions when their excitation energy is above 2A MeV using the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) code by Botvina et al. ("S" stands for SMM) and the fission-like binary-decay model GEMINI by Charity ("G" stands for GEMINI), respectively, are briefly described as well. Examples of benchmarking our models against a large variety of experimental data on particle-particle, particle-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus reactions are presented. Open questions on reaction mechanisms and future necessary work are outlined.

The displacement cross-sections, implemented in the particle and heavy ion transport code system (PHITS), have been calculated to estimate the radiation damage in structural materials used at accelerator facilities. The event generator in PHITS was used to calculate displacement cross-sections for 14 elemental targets and two practical alloys irradiated with neutrons at energies from 10 −10 MeV to 3 GeV, and protons and deuterons at energies from several keV to 3 GeV. These displacement cross-sections were used to estimate the displacement per atom (DPA) in the target assembly at accelerator driven system (ADS) Target Test Facility (TEF-T) using 400-MeV protons, and in the Type 316 stainless steel target using 40-MeV deuterons. For the target assembly at TEF-T using 400-MeV protons, the DPA value for the proton component was approximately twice higher than that for the neutron component. For the Type 316 target using 40-MeV deuterons, radiation damage took place near the surface of Type 316 because of the Coulomb scattering effect between the incident deuterons and the material.
