Cross‐Linked Sodium Alginate‐g‐poly(Acrylic Acid) Structure: A Potential Hydrogel Network for Controlled Delivery of Loxoprofen Sodium

Abstract: A series of sodium alginate-graft-poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels (SA-g-pAA hydrogels) were synthesized with sodium alginate (SA) and acrylic acid (AA) in aqueous solution, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linker and ammonium peroxodisulfate (APS) as an initiator. Hydrogels were evaluated for thermal stability (TGA & DSC), revealing their higher strength toward thermal variation as compared to individual components. SEM micrographs show smooth and solid outer surface with a lack of porosity on it… Show more

“…Further work was applied, where the DSC spectrum of the drug (figure 2) showed sharp peak at 204°C which corresponding to melting point of the drug. showed to be identical with the reported data of loxoprofen sodium, (as shown in figure 4) and the selected λ max was at 223 nm [22] (A) (B) Absorbance (nm)…”

“…Hydrogels can be synthesized from sodium alginate with acrylic polymers or copolymers, and with other compounds such as acrylamide to create an interpenetrating network (IPN) between the polymers based on electrostatic phenomena [ 15 ]. In addition, there are investigations in which a polymerization of sodium alginate (SA) and an acrylic monomer is carried out, using in most cases a crosslinker such as N, N-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBAA) or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA); to obtain hydrogels with different applications [ 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…In addition, PAA hydrogels are non-toxic compounds that have the advantage of easy chemical modification. They also have anionic properties (due to having carboxyl groups) that can be used as an electrode pad for smart drug delivery system [ 25 , 26 ]. However, because the hydrogels prepared using only PAA have disadvantages (low durability and weak mechanical properties), these hydrogels are poorly able to endure life activities when a PAA hydrogel patch is attached to the skin of a human body [ 27 , 28 , 29 ].…”
