Immunomodulators from natural products are widely used for the treatment of infectious diseases, allergies, and cancer in traditional Moroccan medicine. The purpose of this study was the study of two plant seeds of Brassica rapa (Turnip) and Raphanus sativus (Radish) used by Moroccans in traditional medicine to enhance immunity. We have prepared three different extracts from seeds using ethanol, Ethyl Acetate, or water. Immunomodulatory effects of these two plant seeds were tested on rabbit immunity cell proliferation (splenocytes, thymocytes, and macrophages) and their functions (IgG production, cytotoxicity, and phagocytosis). The results obtained indicated that only aqueous extract of B. rapa seeds revealed an immunostimulant effect on both splenocyte and thymocyte proliferation with an increase in cytotoxicity of thymocytes (MLR assay). With R. sativus seeds, we observed an important stimulation of thymocyte proliferation and their cytotoxicity under aqueous extract without effect on splenocyte or macrophages. We concluded that aqueous extract of both seeds (B. rapa and R. sativus) possessed immunostimulant properties leading to stimulation of cellular immunity responsible for defense against viruses.

Au Maroc, la phytothérapie est une pratique très ancienne ; elle y doit énormément à la médecine « araboislamique », même si des non-musulmans, juifs et chrétiens notamment, ont joué un rôle important. Les connaissances empiriques se sont transmises verbalement à travers les générations et se sont enrichies grâce à la situation géogra-phique stratégique bien connue du Maroc (diversité bioclimatique et brassage des civilisations à travers l'histoire). À l'heure actuelle, les plantes médicinales peuvent nous apporter des solutions intéressantes aux contraintes liées à la santé surtout dans des pays en voie de développement. La promotion de la phytothérapie nous permettra de sauvegarder le savoir de nos ancêtres qui tend à disparaître. De par ses missions, l'Institut national des plantes médicinales et aromatiques-Maroc, tend à contribuer à l'élaboration de nouveaux médicaments naturels en étroite collaboration avec des décideurs de ce secteur pour sauvegarder la biodiversité végétale d'une part, et contrôler l'innocuité et la qualité des sous-produits de la médecine traditionnelle d'autre part.Abstract: In Morocco, phytotherapy is an ancient practice, which owes greatly to the "Arabo-Islamic" medicine, even if non-Muslims, Jews and Christian particularly, have played an important part in this regard. Empirical knowledge has been passed down orally through the generations and has been enriched thanks to the strategic geographical situation of Morocco (bioclimatic diversity and civilizations brewing through history). Currently, traditional medicine can give us interesting solutions to the constraints related to health especially in developing countries. The promotion of phytotherapy will help us to save the knowledge of our ancestors, which tends to disappear. Through its missions, the National Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic PlantsMorocco attempts to contribute to the development of new natural drugs, closely with decision-makers from this sector to protect plant biodiversity, and control the safety and quality of sub-products used in traditional medicine.
