-This study aimed to evaluate the control of Rottboelia spp. with the formulated mixture diuron + hexazinone + sulfometuron-methyl and the emergence of this weed in the months of April, May, June, July, August, September, October and November 2012 in sugarcane cultivation, cultivar RB867515. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with treatments in a 4 x 4 factorial arrangement with four replicates for the months of April to November. The emergence tests used a randomized block design, in a 8 x 5 split plot arrangement with four replicates. The analyzed factors were the rates of the formulated mixture (diuron + hexazinone + sulfometuron-methyl), which consisted of: 1,809.00 + 510.00 + 43.50 g ha -1 (T2); 1,507.50 + 425.00 + 36.25 g ha -1 (T3) and 1,386.90 + 391.00 + 33.35 g ha -1 (T4), in addition to the control (T1) without application. Controls over 80.00% were found for the application performed in the month of November in evaluations at 30 and 60 DAA, regardless of the rate in use. All treatments were selective for the sugarcane cultivar RB867515. RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar o crescimento e o desenvolvimento de cinco plantas daninhas do gênero Amaranthus, em condições não-competitivas. As espécies estudadas foram: A. deflexus, A. hybridus, A. retroflexus, A. spinosus e A. viridis. Foram realizadas oito avaliações periódicas de crescimento, espaçadas em 10 dias, iniciando-se aos 20 dias após semeadura (DAS). As variáveis avaliadas por planta foram: área foliar, massa seca das raízes, ramos, folhas, flores + frutos e total; obtendo-se, a partir desta última, as taxas de crescimento absoluto e relativo. Também foram avaliadas as etapas fenológicas de desenvolvimento das plantas. A. deflexus foi a espécie com ciclo vegetativo mais curto, menor acúmulo de massa seca e área foliar. Por outro lado, A. retroflexus e A. hybridus foram as que alcançaram os maiores valores para essas variáveis. A. viridis foi a de melhor adaptabilidade ecológica para as condições em que o experimento foi desenvolvido, pois, além de acumular grande quantidade de massa seca e área foliar, observaram-se rápido desenvolvimento vegetativo e crescimento absoluto. Esses resultados sugerem que A. viridis é uma espécie com alto potencial de interferência nas culturas agrícolas, proporcionado pelo uso eficiente dos recursos de crescimento fornecidos pelo ambiente durante os estádios iniciais de crescimento. ABSTRACT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF FIVE WEED SPECIES OF THE AMARANTHUS GENUSThe aim of this work was to analyze the growth and the development of five weeds of the Amaranthus genus, under non-competitive conditions. The studied species were: A. deflexus, A. hybridus, A. retroflexus, A. spinosus and A. viridis. Eight periodic evaluations of growth were taken, every 10 days, starting at 20 Days After Seeding (DAS). The variables evaluated per plant were: leaf area; roots, stems, leaves, flowers + fruits and total dry weight; obtaining, from the last variable, the absolute and relative growth rates. The phenologyof the plants was also evaluated. A. deflexus was the species with the shortest vegetative cycle , and with the lowest accumulated dry weight and leaf area; whereas A. retroflexus and A. hybridus were the species which reached the highest values for these variables. A. viridis presented the best ecological adaptability for the conditions of the experiment: it showed fast vegetative development and absolute growth rate, and high accumulation of dry weight and leaf area. These results suggest that A. viridis is a species with high potential to interfere in the agricultural crops, due to the efficient use of the growth resources available by the ambient during its initial growth stages.

Biological characteristics and herbicide susceptibility of five weed species of the Amaranthus genus. Plant species classified in the Amaranthus genus are frequently found infesting brazilian agricultural areas, although there are few researches that evaluated the biological characteristics and the control of these species. Therefore, this work was conducted with the objective of analyzing the germination, the growth and the development, estimating the leaf area, the competitiveness and the susceptibility to herbicides of five weed species of the Amaranthus genus. The species of Amaranthus studied were: A. deflexus, A. hybridus, A. retroflexus, A. spinosus and A. viridis. The experiment that evaluated the germination was conducted in the Laboratory of Seed Analyses and the others in the greenhouse of the Crop Science Department of ESALQ/USP, Piracicaba-SP, in the period comprehended between March to December 2005. About the germination, it was established that variation in the availability of light and temperature interferes in all the species of Amaranthus and the highest levels of germination were obtained in condition of photoperiod with alternating temperature (8h-light-30ºC / 16h-dark-20ºC). In less favorable conditions, A. viridis and A. hybridus obtained higher germination levels than all the other species. In general, A. deflexus and A. spinosus were the weed species that presented the lowest rates of germination speed. About the growth and development, it was observed that A. deflexus was the species with shortest vegetative cycle, the lowest dry mass and leaf area accumulation; however, A. retroflexus and A. hybridus were the species which reached the highest values for these variables. The leaf area estimation showed that the linear equation crossing the origin (Ar=a.(C.L)) was adequate to adjust the correlation between the linear blade dimensions and the real leaf area for all the species. About competition, it was concluded that the crop of common bean is more competitive than all the weed species of the Amaranthus genus that were studied in this work, when grown in equivalent proportion; A. deflexus and A. viridis were the species which phenology was less affected by the competition with common bean; the intraspecific competition was the most damaging to the crop of common bean, what suggests that the damages caused by the weeds are more connected with its high density of infestation than the intrinsic competitive ability of the species. The control obtained for the Amaranthus species evaluated in this research presented differences of susceptibility to post-emergence applied herbicides, mainly to trifloxysulfuron-sodium and chlorimuron-ethyl, which A. deflexus was the least susceptible species, followed by A. spinosus, A. viridis, A. hybridus and A. retroflexus.
