Creatine supplementation augments the increase in satellite cell and myonuclei number in human skeletal muscle induced by strength training

Abstract: The present study investigated the influence of creatine and protein supplementation on satellite cell frequency and number of myonuclei in human skeletal muscle during 16 weeks of heavy-resistance training. In a double-blinded design 32 healthy, male subjects (19-26 years) were assigned to strength training (STR) while receiving a timed intake of creatine (STR-CRE) (n = 9), protein (STR-PRO) (n = 8) or placebo (STR-CON) (n = 8), or serving as a non-training control group (CON) (n = 7). Supplementation was giv… Show more

“…Furthermore, maternal creatine supplementation did not affect urinary or plasma parameters in the spiny mouse neonate. Changes in water balance, mainly water retention, have been reported for creatine supplementation in adult humans (28), but the dose used here was clearly not sufficient to produce such effects, as no change in neonatal urine osmolality was observed following maternal creatine supplementation.…”

“…In addition, endurance (97,98,(104)(105)(106)(107)(108)(109)(110) exercise was shown to enhance the skeletal muscle oxidative capacity, resulting in greater endurance capacity (5,120) . Although the muscle regenerative capacity seems to decline at a more advanced age, the reduced satellite cell pool size (119) does not compromise the capacity for muscle hypertrophy to occur even at an advanced age (121)(122)(123) and resistance exercise training was shown to increase muscle fibre size (124)(125)(126)(127) . Recently, Verdijk et al (119) assessed the effects of 12 weeks of leg resistance exercise training on fibre-type specific hypertrophy and satellite cell content in healthy, elderly men.…”

“…Estes indicam que a suplementação de creatina aumenta o peso corporal na primeira semana de carregamento de creatina devido à sua característica osmótica 1,6,[11][12][13] . Contudo, estudiosos questionam se as mudanças nos conteúdos intracelulares de água podem influenciar a tradução de proteínas contráteis e justificar parte do real ganho de massa magra 5,14,15 .…”
