Coxofemoral Luxation complicated by Upward Fixation of the Patella in the Pony

Abstract: SUMMARY Two cases of coxofemoral luxation complicated by upward fixation of the patella are described in the pony. Clinical signs included outward rotation of the stifle and foot and inward rotation of the hock with the stifle and hock joints fixed in extension. One case was treated by performing a medial patellar desmotomy with a resultant significant improvement in locomotion. Other cases of hip luxation reported in the literature, some complicated by upward patellar fixation, are reviewed. Hip luxation is p… Show more

“…Most authors agree that the femoral head nearly always luxates craniodorsal to the acetabulum and the reported clinical signs are therefore also consistent comprising marked lameness with a shortened cranial phase to the stride, outward rotation and apparent shortening of the limb, prominence of the greater trochanter and variable crepitus and resentment on manipulation of the coxofemoral joint (Mackay‐Smith ; Davison ; Bennett et al . ; Platt et al . ; Field et al .…”

“…Upward fixation of the patella is commonly seen secondary to coxofemoral luxation due to the relative shortening of the affected limb (Bennett et al . ; Clegg and Butson ). Primary upward fixation of the patella, however, can lead to luxation of the coxofemoral joint by violent contractions of the quadriceps muscle when the stifle is locked in extension (Malark et al .…”
