Introduction Air pollution is a novel environmental risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Air quality improved during COVID-19 lockdowns; however, the effects of these lockdowns on PM 2.5 concentrations and renal function remain unclear. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study to compare air pollution and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline in patients with stage 5 CKD between a year-long period of lockdown (2020; n = 724) and a similar period before lockdown (2019, n = 758). Results Compared with 2019, a 17.5% reduction in the average PM 2.5 concentration (from 17.36% to 14.32%; P < 0.001) and a 45.1% reduction (from 20.56% to 11.25%; P < 0.001) in cumulative days with PM 2.5 concentration >35 μg/m 3 were noted in 2020. Moreover, a 93% reduction in PM 2.5 air quality index >150 per station-day (from 0.43% to 0.03%) was observed in 2020. From 2019 to 2020, the yearly incidence of eGFR decline ≥5 mL/min/1.73 m 2 decreased by 33.7% (24.6% vs 16.3%; P < 0.001). Similarly, the proportion of patients who started undergoing regular dialysis also decreased by 32.7% in 2020 (from 20.8% to 14.0%; P = 0.001). Conclusion Our findings suggest that fewer events of renal function decline during the COVID-19 pandemic may be associated with a decline in PM 2.5 concentrations, supporting the global strategy of reducing air pollution to prevent CKD progression.

The identification of markers of inflammatory activity at the early stages of pulmonary diseases which share common characteristics that prevent their clear differentiation is of great significance to avoid misdiagnosis, and to understand the intrinsic molecular mechanism of the disorder. The combination of electrophoretic/chromatographic methods with mass spectrometry is currently a promising approach for the identification of candidate biomarkers of a disease. Since the fluid phase of sputum is a rich source of proteins which could provide an early diagnosis of specific lung disorders, it is frequently used in these studies. This report focuses on the state-of-the-art of the application, over the last ten years (2011–2021), of sputum proteomics in the investigation of severe lung disorders such as COPD; asthma; cystic fibrosis; lung cancer and those caused by COVID-19 infection. Analysis of the complete set of proteins found in sputum of patients affected by these disorders has allowed the identification of proteins whose levels change in response to the organism’s condition. Understanding proteome dynamism may help in associating these proteins with alterations in the physiology or progression of diseases investigated.

Profile of Student Learning Motivation in Limited Offline Learning Natural Science Subject

Learning motivation is one of the most important things students must have in supporting learning success. This study aims to describe male and female students' learning motivation profiles in limited offline learning of science subjects. This research uses qualitative methods of a phenomenological approach. The subjects of this study were one male student and one female student in grade IX of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Porong. Data collection techniques use observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The results of this study show that the learning motivation profile of male students in limited offline learning in science subjects is relatively good by achieving five indicators of learning motivation in limited offline learning. The learning motivation profile of female students in limited offline learning of science subjects is classified as very good by achieving all indicators of learning motivation in limited offline learning. This study concludes that students' learning motivation in offline learning is limited to science subjects is relatively good. Female students have better motivation to learn in offline learning than male students, which may be due to intrinsic motivational factors; female students are better than male students, while other factors are due to student behavior.
