Coupled Electro-Mechanical Analysis of Adaptive Material Systems-Determination of the Actuator Power Consumption and System Energy Transfer

Abstract: This article presents a coupled electromechanical analysis of piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) actuators integrated in mechanical systems to determine the actuator power consumption and energy transfer in the electromechanical systems. For a material system with integrated PZT actuators, the power consumed by the PZT actuators consists of two parts: the energy used to drive the system, which is dissipated in terms of heat as a result of the structural damping, and energy dissipated by the PZT actuators themselves b… Show more

“…SHM methods based on the Electromechanical Impedance (EMI) have been applied and found useful for evaluating damage in composite structures. Methods based on the EMI principle, as applied to SHM, were initially proposed by Liang, Sun, and Rogers (2014) and certainly the method constitutes an important aspect of Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). Currently, several papers based on EMI have been produced.…”

“…Currently, several papers based on EMI have been produced. Actually there is a vast literature about the EMI features and its applications ( Baptista & Vieira Filho, 2009;Liang et al, 2014;Park & Inman, 2007;Park, Cudney, & Inman, 2000;Park, Sohn, Farrar, & Inman, 2003 ). This technique requires that the structure is excited in a frequency range through appropriate transducers PZT (Lead Zirconate Titanate) glued to the structure under evaluation.…”

“…This engages the direct piezoelectric effect, and the induced deformation causes an electric charge. Liang et al first showed that the resulting electrical impedance of the PZT is related to the mechanical impedance of the host structure. As given in Equation , the electrical admittance, Y ( ω ), (inverse of electrical impedance) of the PZT actuator is a function of the mechanical impedance of both the PZT actuator, Z ( ω ), and the host structure, Z a ( ω ).…”

“…The EMI method was first proposed by Liang et al [26], and is a non-model based a local method that uses a piezoelectric transducer to act as both an actuator and a sensor simultaneously. The 1-D equation proposed for the EMI method is shown in Equation (1), where it proves that the electrical impedance of the PZT transducer (inverse of Y(ω)) is directly related to the mechanical impedance of the host structure (Zs(ω)).…”
