Corrosion performance and mechanical properties of friction stir welded AA2024‐T3 joints under different corrosion solution exposure

Abstract: Aluminum alloy 2024‐T3 sheets were friction stir welded (FSWed) and the microstructure in the thermo‐mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and stir zone (SZ) were characterized. The effect of corrosion exposure on the joints was evaluated under different solutions (3.5 wt% NaCl, 3.5 wt% NaCl + 1 wt% HCl, and exfoliation corrosion‐EXCO) by immersion tests as well as electrochemical measurements; specimens with pre‐corroded joints were subjected to tensile testing. The results indicate that TMAZ and SZ of the FSWed … Show more

“…percent HCl, and exfoliation corrosion solution utilizing submersion and electrochemical methods at the stir zone. The lowest mechanical characteristics and higher mass loss were observed in samples in EXCO solution [ 22 ]. In 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution, the CR levels of the Al alloys prepared using FSW, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), and GTAW were very low and were moderate in SMAW samples.…”

“…In the stir zone, severe plastic deformation occurred due to high temperatures and dynamic recrystallization during the welding process. Te microstructure of the stir zone consists of refned grains and second-phase particles expected to be Al 2 CuMg precipitates distributed uniformly [27]. Figure 6(f ) displays the microstructure of TMAZ, which is located between SZ and HAZ, and magnifed views of region E. Te grains in this zone are elongated and oriented in the direction of the material fow.…”

“…Xu et al studied the time-varying trends of pitting geometrical features for the different zones of Q235 welded joints, as well as the effect of pitting damage on the mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of welded joints [4]. The corrosion resistance of different positions on the joint surface and its effect on joint properties have been investigated under different solutions by Li et al [5]. The microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and corrosion performance of the thermomechanically affected zone and heat-affected zone were mainly studied to reveal the relationship between the microstructure and properties in different solutions.…”
