Correspondence between verbal and nonverbal behavior is a relation between what a person says and does or between what a person does and reports. Correspondence training is a procedure to establish the relation between verbal and nonverbal behavior. The purpose of this study was to review studies on correspondence training, analyze the characteristics of the studies, and provide directions for future research. Sixteen single-case design studies were selected, reviewed, and analyzed in the following categories: participants, settings, dependent variables, intervention and procedural integrity, overall outcomes, and review of research methodology based on Quality Indicators(CEC, 2014). Results indicated that the studies on correspondence training have been effective in improving play, on-task, and other appropriate behaviors as well as correspondence between saying and doing, and reducing inappropriate behavior. Based upon review of the studies, directions for future research are discussed.

“…Correspondence training is defined as an operant procedure that modifies a nonverbal behavior by reinforcing the correspondence between verbal behavior and nonverbal behavior (Baer, 1990;Risley & Hart, 1968). According to Huffman et al (2016), correspondence training employs a Say-Do procedure in which children verbalize plans to conduct a nonverbal behavior, carry out the behavior and receive reinforcement for emitting that behavior at a later time. Food stealing is often a serious behavioral problem among children with diagnoses of autism and other developmental disorders. Very few empirical studies concerning this behavioral challenge have been reported. We applied a correspondence training procedure to teach self‐control as replacement behavior to four children with autism and developmental disorders who displayed food stealing in the community. A changing criterion design embedded within a nonconcurrent multiple‐probe across participants design was used. The treatment succeeded for all four participants by increasing latency to eating highly preferred food to a predetermined criterion and reducing occurrences of food stealing to zero. Three participants generalized the replacement behavior to natural settings and maintained the behavior for 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and 4 months. One participant without expressive language was taught successfully during treatment trials but failed to maintain and generalize the behavior. A functional relation between delaying food eating and Say‐Do correspondence training was demonstrated.

Say-Do correspondence is typically defined as individuals’ doing what they said they would do and accurately reporting what they did. The present study evaluated the effects of the delay between responses of verbal correspondence (Say, Do, Report) and the relation among responses (Say-Do, Do-Report, Say-Report, and Say-Do-Report) in a correspondence procedure. Eight adults were assigned to one of two groups that were differentiated by the delay among responses: Non-Delayed group (i.e., 0 hours among responses), Delayed group (i.e., 24 hours among responses). The correspondence task consisted of three phases: (1) Say (answering questions), (2) Do (performing different actions in relation to Say), and (3) Report (answering questions about Do). The Delayed group presented lower percentages of correspondence, but no statistically significant differences were found between groups. We discuss the increase in value of the delay variable and relevance of this delay to matching in clinical contexts.Keywords: Verbal correspondence; Say-Do; Do-Report; temporal delay; adults.
