Correlations between the germination capacity and selected physical properties of cultivated radish seeds

Abstract: Relationships between the physical properties of seed and their germination capacity and energy is an important consideration for separating seeds of the highest or lowest quality. The objective of this study was to determine the correlations between the selected aerodynamic, geometric, frictional and mass parameters of cultivated radish (Raphanus sativus L.) seeds and their germination capacity for the purpose of improving seed quality. The parameters were determined for graded and discarded radish seeds and … Show more

“…The length and width of spikelets and isolated kernels were determined with the use of the MWM 2325 workshop microscope within an accuracy of 0.02 mm, thickness was measured using a thickness gauge with an indicator within an accuracy of 0.01 mm, and mass was determined with the RADWAG WAA 100/C/2 laboratory weighing scale within an accuracy of 0.1 mg, as described by Kaliniewicz et al [18].…”

“…In addition, determination of the physical attributes is used in terms of the final product quality evaluation and classification of different types (Taner et al, 2015). It also allows planning and controlling the above processes and gives a possibility of selecting parameters to functioning of devices and machines (Kaliniewicz et al, 2014). The information on the size and forms of farming components is essential to plan sizing, harvesting, separation, planting and handling devices (Sahay and Singh, 2004).…”

“…Some results show that darker seeds are more resistant to infection by damping-off fungi [17]. There are reports about no significant economic benefit [21] of grading of Pinus sylvestris L. seed on colour and the effect can be decreased by pale full seeds mimicking the empty seeds [22], but more studies reports evidence of possible use of the seed coat colour and spectrometric effect [23][24][25][26][27][28] as an indicator of seed germination and following seedlings growth. Yet, the results for seed germination are not consistent.…”
