Correlations between deciduous and permanent tooth morphology in a European American sample

Abstract: The expression of dental morphological characteristics is partially genetically controlled, and is assumed to be similar in deciduous and permanent dentitions. However, there are few published data comparing normal morphological variation between the two dentitions in the same individual. For the current study, data were collected from European Americans (N = 54) whose teeth were cast both as children and adults. We observed 19 trait expressions in deciduous and permanent dentitions. Deciduous traits were scor… Show more

“…[323546] However, it is important to have the dichotomous expression of the morphological trait according to the ASUDAS system in mind, as for instance, in the American populations, it has been evidenced that when the protostylid is present (Grade 0 ASUDAS) it can be in furrow expressions (Grade 2 and 3 ASUDAS), in furrow and blunt vertex expressions (Grades 4, 5, and 6 ASUDAS), and in cusps with a free apex expressions (Grade 7 ASUDAS); Thereupon, regardless of the furrow or cusp expression, the correlation is high. Likewise, a very peculiar situation occurs with the fossa or point P expression (Grade 1 ASUDAS), associated with the cervical fossa or foramen cecum of the permanent low molars'.…”

“…Deciduous dental asymmetry has been studied in Dominican mulatto and south Australian children (Townsend and GarciaGodoy, 1984;Townsend and Farmer, 1998). Correlation and discrimination of deciduous dental metrics and morphology have focused on European, American, and global samples (Harris and Lease, 2005;Lease and Sciulli, 2005;Edgar and Lease, 2007). Fused and double primary teeth have been reported in archaeological samples and living populations in India and elsewhere (Tasa, 1998;Tasa and Lukacs, 2001;Smith and Wojcinski, 2011).…”
