Correlation of mast cells in periodontal diseases

Abstract: Background:Among the cells involved in immune and inflammatory responses in periodontal disease, mast cells have been shown to be capable of generating a large number of biologically active substances. Mast cells are mobile, bone-marrow-derived, granule-containing immune cells that are found in all connective tissue and mucosal environments and in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Mast cells are able to phagocytose, process and present antigens as effectively as macrophages. The present study was und… Show more

“…Mast cell reaction has been investigated in periodontal disease by many authors and conflicting results have been reported (Lagdive et al, 2013;Steinsvoll et al, 2004;Batista et al, 2005;Gemmell et al, 2004). Some authors found a decreased mast cell density, while others noticed a significant increase.…”

“…A significant increase in mast cell density has been found in gingival inflammation, but no explanation regarding their implication in the maintenance and progression of the inflammatory process has been revealed [52]. Moreover, there are no data on the relationship between MCs and the density of the inflammatory infiltrate.…”

“…MCs are normal residents of the lamina propria of human oral mucosa and gingiva 8 . They produce various biologically active substances, which allow them to actively participate in immune and inflammatory processes associated with periodontal disease 9 . In their cytoplasm, they contain about 80 to 300 granules which exhibit metachromasy and toluidine blue staining 10 .…”
