Correlation between risk factors for vascular disease and the American Urological Association Symptom Score

Abstract: of LUTS in men with and without risk factors for cardiovascular disease was compared. RESULTSThe mean AUA-SS was 7.2 for the entire cohort, 5.6 in men with no risk factors, and 7.9 in men with at least one risk factor ( P < 0.05). In men with one to four risk factors, the mean AUA-SS was 6.9, 7.9, 10.7, and 19.5, respectively. There was no correlation between the AUA-SS and prostate size in the entire cohort or among any groups. CONCLUSIONSMen with risk factors for vascular disease are more likely to have a hi… Show more

“…Ischemia has also been recently postulated to be involved in the pathogenesis of non-obstructive, non-neurogenic bladder dysfunction and the subsequent development of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), especially in the elderly population. A close correlation between LUTS and vascular risk factors, such as smoking and hypertension, may suggest that aging-associated pelvic atherosclerosis is a potential mechanism45. Similarly, our epidemiological research has also demonstrated that metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for LUTS and overactive bladder (OAB) in women with type 2 diabetes6.…”

“…7 ED is a well-recognized index of cardiovascular risk and a predictor of coronary artery disease factors. 22 Furthermore, several studies have reported an association between BPH/LUTS and CVD, which demonstrate greater LUTS among men with one 23 or more 2325 cardiovascular risk factors. Similarly, CAN complicates T1DM and is an independent CVD risk factor in affected patients.…”

“…Malenka et al reported that the men following a transurethral resection of the prostate have a higher mortality than expected from acute myocardial infarction, which suggested an initial association between cardiovascular disease and LUTS. Gibbons et al evaluated the correlation between cardiovascular risk factors and IPSS comparing the presence of risk factors with LUTS severity . They included hypertension, smoking, dyslipidemia and DM as cardiovascular risk factors in the study.…”
