Correlation between mastitis occurrence and the count of microorganisms in bulk raw milk of bovine dairy herds in four selective culture media

Abstract: Milk is the normal secretion of the mammary gland, practically free of colostrum and obtained by the complete milking of one or more healthy animals. Mastitis is an inflammatory process of the mammary gland and it may cause alterations in the milk. The present work aimed to verify whether it is possible, by means of the counts of microorganism in the bulk raw milk in four selective culture media, to establish a correlation with the occurrence of mastitis and therefore, to monitor this disease in bovine dairy h… Show more

“…Mastitis also has negative effects on the quality of the milk and manufactured milk products, decreasing the shelf life of the liquid milk products (Guerin-Faublee et al 2002). Intramammary infections with mastitis has negative effects resulting in the reduction of milk yield (Souto et al 2010;Fragkou et al 2014) which is considered to be the most important cause of worldwide economic losse in the dairy industry. The most frequently isolated microorganisms are staphylococci, streptococci, and coliforms, but other microorganisms may infect the udder (Blum et al 2014;Hosseinzadeh and Saei 2014).…”

“…From a practical perspective, mastitis is the response of the gland to infection commonly acquired by invasion of pathogenic bacteria through the orifice and teat canal. This disease is an inflammatory process of the mammary gland that causes changes in the composition of milk, the secretion of the epithelial cells and reduced functional capacity of the udder [1]. It is the disease with the most prevalence in dairy herds [2], with a great economic impact on milk production [3].…”
