Correlation between impulsivity dimensions and the control in a motor timing task

Abstract: Little is known about the role of the attentional, motor and non-planning impulsivities in motor timing tasks. The aim of this study was to correlate the motor performance in a motor timing task with the performance in neuropsychological tests of twenty two volunteers. Before the execution of the motor task, participant wore a headphone and heard five times each temporal reference (2,500 and 3,500 msec) that consisted of two “bips”. After, the motor timing task was performed in five trials of each temp… Show more

“…The disturbance of these executive functions may then interfere with motor control (Kaiser et al., 2015). However, although the results of many studies have suggested that impulsivity level may interfere with motor control (Bachorowski & Newman, 1990; Lage et al., 2011; Lemke et al., 2005), other research has shown a lower association between hyperactive-impulsive symptoms in ADHD and motor impairment, rather than attentional symptoms (Meyer & Sagvolden, 2006; Pitcher et al., 2003).…”

“…Lage et al. (2011) suggested that motor performance does not only involve the activation of motor responses but also other variables such as mental representation of activity, the individual’s relationship with the context and the joint action of processes of attention, memory, decision making, and control over preponderant responses.…”

“…39 Lower accuracy of motor timing has been suggested to be linked to impulsivity and to inhibitory control deficit mainly in ADHD/DCD 40 in the preparation of a response, in stopping an in-progress response, and to manage the interference. 41 Discordant results relative to protective and risk function of hyperactive-impulsive predictor in jumping-running and ball motor abilities could be due to different mechanisms involved in two motor tasks; this consideration is supported also by their collocation in two distinct factors of the PCA analysis.…”
