Correlates of physical activity level in breast cancer survivors participating in the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) Study

Abstract: Low physical activity levels in breast cancer survivors are associated with specific behavioral and other factors, which can be considered as indicators of women at higher risk. Findings of significant differences in physical activity levels based on demographic characteristics suggest the importance of promoting physical activity particularly among breast cancer survivors of ethnic minority or lower education levels.

“…Our results suggest that, although other socioeconomic variables such as household income might be associated with lifestyle behaviour at diagnosis, education was the strongest independent predictor of continued smoking and continued physical inactivity after a cancer diagnosis. Those findings are consistent with significant results 16,[34][35][36] and nonsignificant trends 37 previously reported in studies that did not examine all 3 socioeconomic indicators. This relationship between education and post-diagnosis behaviour modification could also be reflective of a general phenomenon among patients with chronic disease 38 .…”

“…The WHEL physical activity measures have been validated against physical activity recalls and objective accelerometry-based assessments [22]. We converted physical activity into units of metabolic equivalent (MET) hours per week and categorized into quintiles of distribution, as was previously published [23,24].…”
