Core Microbiome of Medicinal Plant Salvia miltiorrhiza Seed: A Rich Reservoir of Beneficial Microbes for Secondary Metabolism?

Abstract: Seed microbiome includes special endophytic or epiphytic microbial taxa associated with seeds, which affects seed germination, plant growth, and health. Here, we analyzed the core microbiome of 21 Salvia miltiorrhiza seeds from seven different geographic origins using 16S rDNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, followed by bioinformatics analysis. The whole bacterial microbiome was classified into 17 microbial phyla and 39 classes. Gammaproteobacteria (67.6%), Alphaproteobacteria (15.6%), Betaproteobacteria (2.6%), … Show more

“…The core bacterial microbiomes were composed of Gammaproteobacteria , Alphaproteobacteria , Betaproteobacteria , Sphingobacteria , Bacilli, and Actinobacteria , and the core fungal microbiome included Dothideomycetes , Leotiomycetes , and Tremellomycetes . They were important components of the plant microbiome and also a gene reservoir of secondary metabolism in Salvia miltiorrhiza seeds (Chen, Wu, et al, ; Chen, Li, et al, ). This study suggested that the core bacterial microbiome in tobacco leaves during the aging process included Enterobacteriales , Pseudomonadales , Sphingomonadales, Xanthomonadales , Burkholderiales , Rhizobiales, and Bacillales and included Incertae_sedis_ Eurotiomycetes , Wallemiales , Sporidiobolales , Capnodiales , Eurotiales , an unclassified Ascomycota, and an unidentified Eurotiomycetes form the core fungal microbiome.…”

The influence of vertically-transmitted microorganisms on seed and seedling secondary metabolites (Chen et al , 2018; Shazad et al , 2018), and their cascading effects on tree biotic interactions (e.g. Peris et al , 2018) will also have to be investigated.…”
