Copolymers of Diallyldimethylammonium Chloride and Vinyl Ether of Monoethanolamine: Synthesis, Flocculating, and Antimicrobial Properties

Abstract: N,N‐diallyl‐N,N‐dimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) and vinyl ether of monoethanolamine (VEMEA) copolymer P(DADMAC‐VEMEA) were synthesized using radical polymerization in water media using ammonium persulfate as an initiator. The synthesis of this copolymer was investigated over a wide composition range at low conversion levels. The viscosity of the copolymers was measured in aqueous 1 M NaCl. Flocculating action and antimicrobial activities of the copolymers P(DADMAC‐VEMEA) against microbacteria and sulfate‐re… Show more

“…[30][31][32] Among many cationic polymers poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) have been reported as very effective antibacterial materials with their various counterions and modified forms. 33,34 DNA transfection 35,36 and complexing properties with DNA stand out as the advantages of PEI. [35][36][37][38] Primary amines are known to be more effective than secondary and tertiary amines for many reactions such as protonation, chemical modification, betainization, etc.…”

“…This can be explained by the higher rate of free-radical formation, leading to faster consumption of monomers. Accordingly, shorter chains are formed and easily washed out by solvents [ 36 ].…”

“…11,12 Typical examples of antimicrobial activity copolymers (P(DADMAC-VEMEA)) were synthesized using radical polymerization in water media. 13 PNIPAAm gel is visible when utilized for naked-eye detection. Several studies have been done concerning the confocal laser microscopy scan of the internal structure of PNIPAAm gel.…”
