“…We expected an increase in burnout dimensions over time, as well as a decrease in coping strategies. Finally, based on previous research that supported the hypothesized associations between burnout and coping in sport (Madigan et al, 2020), we expected negative relationships between burnout and coping variables during the season.…”

“…Athletes competing at the national and international level face loneliness, pressure from parents and coaches, and a lack of leisure time and contact with family during practice and competition, which are in addition to excessive hours of training, travel and competitions ( Madigan et al, 2019 ). These situations bring high-intensity emotions and feelings, such as anxiety, worry, and stress which must be controlled by athletes in order to cope with and adapt to their feelings ( Madigan et al, 2020 ). Stressful situations require the development of strategies to deal with them in order not to let stress negatively affect performance.…”

“…It is important to highlight that 9.43% of the soccer athletes remained stable with no oscillations throughout the season with low levels of frequency of feelings of burnout, indicating remote possibilities of manifestation of the syndrome. Evidence shows that low levels of burnout are associated with effective coping strategies 11,31,33 , self-directed perfectionism 10,11 , passion for sport 10 , and also for the ability of these individuals to deal with the stress, pressures, demands, and uncertainties existing in this category throughout the season, in relation to the final stage of promoting the base category towards the professional team.…”

“…It also causes alterations in the personal, family, and professional lives of these athletes 30 , as in many cases they will have to try to continue their sports career by looking for a new club, moving to another city, and moving away from family members and their social cycle. All of these factors combined contribute to a higher probability of manifestation of burnout [31][32][33]35 , especially in the U-20 category, which is the last divider between amateurism and professionalization, which reinforces the need for individualized monitoring and the establishment of specific benchmarks for this category.…”

“…As burnout is a reaction to chronic stress (Smith, 1986), the management of stressful situations (i.e., coping) should be relevant to preventing and controlling burnout (John and Henrik, 2013;Madigan et al, 2020). The burnout control can be done through coping, a set of behavioural and cognitive efforts aimed to control, reduce or tolerate internal or external demands that arise in specific stressful situations and are evaluated as overloads (Folkman and Lazarus, 1985).…”
