Coping styles as predictors of survival time in bladder cancer

Abstract: The role of coping in the survival of cancer is a controversial topic. To specifiy the influence of coping on survival time, we conducted a longitudinal, prospective and observational study. In a preoperative interview, 105 patients with primary bladder cancer were asked about their active and depressive coping strategies. Ten years later, the survival rate was recorded; in cases of death, it was noted whether or not it was in consequence of the bladder cancer. Kaplan-Meier analyses of the collected data revea… Show more

“…Our results also supported the predictive value of coping styles for the evolution of the disease, in accordance with other studies (Cousson-Gélie et al, 2007;Hardt et al, 2010;Merz et al, 2010;Nagano et al, 2008;Petticrew et al, 2002;Prasertsri, Holden, Keefe, & Wilkie, 2011). Specifically, we found that the evolution was predicted by Resignation and Self-blame, both of them avoidant or passive styles of coping.…”

“…Likewise, emotional features such as emotional suppression, stoic acceptance of events (learned helplessness), and overcompensation towards other people have been proposed as risk factors for the onset and evolution of cancer (Giese-Davis et al, 2008;Greer, 1991;Sebastián, León, & Hospital, 2009). Furthermore, the potential role of coping styles (measures of the thoughts and actions people use to handle stressful events) in the life of patients suffering from cancer has also been the subject of many studies (Cousson-Gélie, Bruchon-Schweitzer, Dilhuydy, & Mutand, 2007;Font & Cardoso, 2009;Graves et al, 2005;Stanton et al, 2000), although there is little consistent evidence that psychological coping styles play an important part in survival from or recurrence of cancer (Hardt, Gillitzer, Schneider, Fischbeck, & Thüroff, 2010;Petticrew, Bell, & Hunter, 2002).…”

“…The latter is also used for staging of the disease, which will guide the medical professional to provide the best treatment (3) . According to clinical studies, in 80% of patients bladder cancer is diagnosed at a non-invasive stage, when conservative treatments are more effective, and the prognosis is better (5) . However, prognosis depends on several factors such as stage of the disease, histological tumor grade, multifocality (more than three lesions), presence of lymphatic invasion, association with in situ carcinoma, morphology and pattern of gene mutation (4) .…”

“…Entre os vários grupos de pacientes oncológicos selecionamos aqueles com câncer de bexiga. Segundo estudos clínicos, em 80% dos acometidos, a doença é diagnosticada em um estágio não-invasivo e os tratamentos conservadores são mais eficazes e o prognóstico é melhor (HARDT, 2010;NCI, 2015).…”
