Coopetitive Games for Management of Marine Transportation Activity: A Study Case

Abstract: In this paper, we will use coopetitive game theory to analyze a case of real coopetition among port companies, for what concerns loading and unloading of goods, within a competitive management scenario of marine transportation activities. Our research consists of the analysis of a study case involving coopetition between two real companies from which we obtained the financial and contractual data allowing us to define two modeling payoff functions, both of them based on real agreements and tariffs. “…In evaluating the motivation of the coopetition process (Bengtsson & Kock, 2000;Nalebuff & Bradenburger, 1997;Pant & Yu, 2018) among the largest shipping lines operating on the coast, some aspects were found in the interviews with the companies in this study (Table 3). Regarding the positive aspects, one of the most relevant points is the use of the vessels' capacity.…”

“…Regarding the motivations of coopetition in the shipping industry, the relevant variables were raised during the interviews (Table 4). Different levels of competition and cooperation can exist in a coopetitive relationship (Donato et al, 2018). Port coopetition results in greater bargaining powers against trade imposed by the government, investment barriers, mega carriers, and transport alliances (Song, 2003).…”
