Controllable Preparation of Uniform Micron‐Sized Barium‐Sulfate Spheres

Abstract: In this work, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium (EDTA·2Na) is used as a complexing agent to control the preparation of micron‐sized barium sulfate spheres via a precipitation reaction between sodium sulfate and barium chloride at 35 °C. To better characterize the morphology, structure and particle size of barium sulfate spheres and to understand the formation mechanisms, X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), laser particle size analyser (PSD) and scanning elect… Show more

“…In this strategy, spherical BaSO 4 NP is used as the sacrificial template for the inner cavity, and the APF serves as the mesoporous template and structural direct agent in the shell. The monodispersed BaSO 4 NP is prepared through a controlled deposition process based on the literature report [ 33 ]. The key to this synthesis is that EDTA was added to chelate with Ba 2+ and control the release of Ba 2+ in solution.…”

“…In order to monitor component changes of the samples in the synthetic process, the FTIR spectra of BaSO 4 NP, BaSO 4 @APF-SiO 2 , BaSO 4 @mSiO 2 , and HMSN, were detected. The characteristic peaks of BaSO 4 occurred at 1171, 1063, 982, 632, and 605 cm −1 ( Figure 2 b) [ 33 , 34 ]. Two additional peaks at 1577 and 1407 cm −1 could be assigned to the asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of C–O in ionized and coordinated EDTA, suggesting that some EDTA coexists with the BaSO 4 NP [ 37 , 38 ].…”

“…BaSO 4 microspheres (1.3~1.8 µm) were prepared in our own laboratory [ 14 ]. CA weighted 30,000 g∙mol −1 of average molecular was procured from Sino Pharm Group (Beijing, China).…”

“…For example, TiO 2 improves the hydrophilicity of the sheet, and a TiO 2/ cellulose acetate (CA) sheet and a BaSO 4 /CA sheet can improve the reflectance. The light reflectance value of a TiO 2 bifunctional sheet is less than 92% and 92~98% in the wavelength range of 400~450 nm and 450~800 nm, respectively [ 13 ], while a bifunctional sheet prepared with BaSO 4 can reach 97% and over 98% in the range of 400~450 nm and 450~800 nm, respectively [ 14 ], which is higher than a TiO 2 bifunctional sheet. The bifunctional sheets prepared by BaSO 4 microspheres with narrow particle size distribution are used in dry chemical diagnosis [ 15 ], which is not only conducive to form a wider response range, but also can form uniform micron-level secondary voids between particles to filter and uniformly disperse serum.…”
