Contribution to the Optimization of a Gas Chromatographic Method by QbD Approach used for Analysis of Essential Oils from Salvia officinalis

Abstract: Numerous articles on Salvia officinalis L. have been published regarding the composition of their essential oil. The considerable variation found may be due to the quality of the plant material as well as to the methods used for analysis. A simple GC-MS method was developed and optimized in the QbD approach, for the determination of sage essential oils. The optimization of GC-MS analysis was performed using different mobile phase flows, injection volumes, split ratios and temperature programs. The optimized me… Show more

“…A variety of analytical methods for medicinal plants have been developed through an AQbD approach, such as the mass spectrometry analysis [ 84 , 85 ], capillary electrophoresis analysis [ 86 , 87 , 88 ], supercritical fluid chromatography analysis [ 89 , 90 ], gas chromatography analysis [ 91 , 92 ] and so on. Applications of AQbD to the development a HPLC analysis were announced in many studies [ 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 48 , 49 ].…”

“…For example, there are studies about the development of HPLC-UV/PDA methods for the analysis of flavonoids [ 13 , 14 ], saponins [ 15 , 16 ], terpenoids [ 17 ], quinones [ 9 ], and phenolic [ 18 ]; HPLC-MS methods to determine terpene lactones [ 19 ] and polyphenols [ 20 ]; HPLC-ELSD methods to quantify sugars and their derivatives [ 21 ], etc. In addition, other chromatographic methods have also been developed based on AQbD, such as capillary electrophoresis [ 22 , 23 ], supercritical fluid chromatography [ 24 , 25 ], gas chromatography [ 26 , 27 ], etc. However, the practice of applying APLC and AQbD to developing qNMR methods for herbal medicines has not been reported.…”

“…The representatives of Lamiaceae family (Salvia, Lavandula, Mentha, Origanum etc.) are aromatic species, known for their flavoring properties due to essential oil [5,13,21,25]. Teucrium genus is not as known and investigated as other Lamiaceae representatives, but some of its variations are presently used as medicinal (Teucrium chamaedrys L., T. montanum L.) or food spices (Teucrium polium L.) in many traditional communities throughout the world (Greece, Spain, Turkey, Iran, Morocco, etc.).…”
