Continuous wave and ReS2 passively Q-switched Er : SrF2 laser at ∼3  μm

Abstract: We report on an efficient Er:SrF laser at 2.79 μm. A continuous wave output power of 1.06 W was obtained with a slope efficiency of 41%, significantly exceeding the Stokes efficiency of 35%. Stable Q-switched laser operation was realized by using an ReS saturable absorber, generating an average output power of 0.58 W with a pulse duration of 508 ns at a repetition rate of 49 kHz, corresponding to a pulse energy of 12.1 μJ.

“…For example, the researchers achieved the visible‐light Q‐switched laser using topological insulators . In addition, 3‐µm Q‐switched lasers based on layered materials have also been widely studied . Second, besides single‐wavelength operation, multiwavelength Q‐switched lasers have been also developed .…”

“…Because of the weak interlayer coupling, ReS 2 was considered a novel platform for investigating mesoscopic physics and photonics without the limitation of large area and layer numbers. 78 These results revealed ReS 2 as a promising optical modulator.…”

“…Furthermore, the photoelectric properties of ReS 2 are similar from bulk to monolayer [16]. As a semiconductor, ReS 2 exhibits strong nonlinear absorption, so that ReS 2 as SA has been experimentally used in solid lasers in 1.5-μm, 2.8-μm, and 3-μm wavelength [1719]. Recently, ReS 2 based on sapphire substrate has been reported as a saturable absorber in 1-μm laser [20].…”
