The study intends to develop an empirical vector model of Russia's foreign policy in the Asia-Pacific region. In order to achieve this goal, based on the Foreign Policy Principles of the Russian Federation for 2000-2016, the vectors of Russia's foreign policy were determined, and the place of the Asia-Pacific region in Russia's foreign policy was outlined. Using data from the World Bank's World Integrated Trade Solution, Russia's key economic partners in the Asia-Pacific region were identified. Information on GDP growth rates and inflation index trends shows that such partners are Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. The authors developed the vector model of Russia's foreign policy in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on economic cooperation with the above-mentioned key partner countries. The proposed foreign policy vector model will contribute to Russia's increased economic and political presence in the Asia-Pacific region, which is in line with Russia's foreign policy goals in this region and will also have a positive effect on the development of the Russian economy, particularly in the Far East. The limitation is that the proposed vector of Russia's foreign policy development can be implemented in the absence of additional international sanctions, which might target companies from the Asia-Pacific region.

Since making it out as the most powerful nation following the Second World War, Washington has demonstrated and employed two independent yet interlocking policies of Exceptionalism and Containment in its foreign policy. American exceptionalism is ingrained in its pride as the most powerful military and economic power, and a champion of democracy. While Washington sees itself as exceptional, it also believes that the fruition of its national interest and strategic objectives depends on bestowing friendly states with exceptional code. To place the discussion in perspective, we take Iran as a case study and explore the transition of Iran from being a recipient of American exceptional code, a strategic tool of American containment policy, to becoming an object of containment itself. The article applies George Kennan’s exceptionalism and containment strategy on USA–Iran relations in both Shah’s rule and post-revolution era. We conclude that decades of US exceptionalism in the region have multiplied into regional challenges for the USA itself and raised the importance of Iran and increased its security threats.

Before the onset of the industrial revolution, China and India were the two biggest powers in Eurasia. Their total population comprised almost half of the world’s population. And the GNP of premodern China was half of the combined GNP of the world. Before circa 1600 CE, most of the textiles and iron in the world were manufactured in these two countries. China and India suffered a temporary eclipse during the age of colonialism. However, with the rise of the economic and military power of China and India from the late 20th century, it seems that these two countries are bound to reclaim their traditional positions as big powers in the international system. However, there is a caveat. In the premodern era, the Himalayas prevented any intimate contact between the ‘dragon’ and the ‘elephant’. But, from the mid-20th century, advances in technology, economic competition and the annexation of Tibet by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) among other factors resulted in China and India coming into direct contact with each other. The result has been cooperation–competition–conflict. And this has had consequences not only for these two countries but for the whole world. The present article attempts to trace the troubled trajectory of India’s China policy from the late 1940s (when these two countries became independent) up to the present day.
