Contextual Awareness in a WSN/RFID Fusion Navigation System

Abstract: We present insight into how contextual awareness can be derived from, and improve, a fusion algorithm combing a WSN and a passive RFID for autonomous mobile robot navigation. Contextual awareness of not where the robot is, but rather the context in which it exists in relation to the environment and human user serves to improve accuracy in navigation, alters the speed of the robot, and modifies its behavior. The WSN system, using a virtual potential field, provides fast general navigation in open areas and the … Show more

“…The first kind is relatively mature, but the signals are blocked by tall buildings or when users are indoor or inside places like caves or jungles. The second kind based on the wireless frequency signal (such as wireless fidelity [2], radio frequency identification [3], and ultrawideband [4]) requires preinstallation of signal transmitting equipment in the positioning area, which is costly and has a limited application range. It cannot be used in the positioning area and in rooms where there are no signal transmitting/receiving devices.…”
