Contaminants of emerging concern in aquatic environment: Occurrence, monitoring, fate, and risk assessment

Abstract: The present work provides a review focusing on contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in aquatic environment, with an emphasis on their occurrence, monitoring, fate, and risk assessment in the research published in the scientific literature in 2019. Several studies revealed that these organic contaminants were detected in many water bodies and suspect, nontarget, and target screening provided an efficient detection for the co-existing organic substances with complex components. Wastewater resource recovery fa… Show more

“…Across the globe, natural environment has not always been a matter of concern for human beings, which has led to environmental deterioration in a big way (Tang et al, 2020). The ubiquitous attention on environmental protection is borne out of the desire to curtail climate changes in the form of global warming, pollution of seas and rivers, and desertification, which adversely affects human health, a deep-rooted and abiding concern (Dwidienawati et al, 2021).…”

“…Evaluating the concentration of CECs in aquatic organism can be used as an indicator to access their transformation in the food chain, which in turns significantly reveals the extent of their risk to human health [5]. They are found as hundreds polluting water resources, in fact, they are among the major water contaminants and are mainly released from agricultural, industrial waste, hospital effluents, septic tanks, and other anthropogenic activities.…”

“…Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are embodied by chemicals found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), compounds that are considered endocrine disruptors, antibiotics, pesticides, and herbicides, among others [1][2][3][4]. The classification of CECs has also evolved with industrial development, contaminant release matrix, wastewater treatment technologies and challenges, and regulations [5,6].…”
