Progress in the design of nanoporous adsorbent materials containing transition metals for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern

Abstract: Significant attention has been paid to contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) for several years due to their persistence in water sources and toxicity. The necessity of upgrading current wastewater treatment technologies is vital to guarantee timely remediation of CECs, particularly given the scarcity of potable water for direct human consumption and even for agricultural irrigation. In this regard, the integration of transition metals onto porous adsorbent materials for use in water and wastewater treatment … Show more

“…For this reason, the conversion of a chitosan-smectite nanocomposite to a carbonized smectite material can be performed by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) as a sustainable process [31]. In addition to this system, the inclusion of transition metals to the adsorbent could contribute to the adsorption efficacy due to complexation interactions with adsorbate molecules that act as ligands [32,33]. Apart from their application in adsorption, materials based on transition metal-carbonaceous phase-clay minerals were successfully used as catalysts in the advanced oxidative degradation of various organic pollutants [34].…”

“…Pure silica zeolite materials (PSZs), which contain only silicon and oxygen atoms, are highly hydrophobic 32,33 and this holds signicant importance for water treatment applications. [34][35][36][37] Moreover, PSZs display exceptional high thermal stability, opening the possibility of being regenerated by thermal swing aer being spent during adsorption. 38,39 PSZs have been extensively tested as adsorbents for gas/vapor [40][41][42][43] and liquid 38,[44][45][46] phase separations.…”
