Contact lens fitting to correct irregular astigmatism after corneal refractive surgery

Abstract: Results indicate that contact lens fitting is a good-and sometimes the only-alternative for patients with induced irregular astigmatism. Rigid gas-permeable contact lenses provided the best visual performance and patient tolerance.

“…In our case, the significant improvement in BCVA was achieved with rigid contact lenses, as is the case in other studies. 19 Intrastromal corneal rings are another therapeutic option. They change the biomechanical properties of the cornea and could be used to correct iatrogenic keratectasia and the associated residual myopia or to facilitate the use of rigid contact lenses in these cases.…”

“…7,8 When the disease progresses to a stage where RGP contact lenses no longer offer an optimal solution to the patients due to the inability to obtain a physiologically acceptable fit, scleral contact lenses become a preferred option. 5,9 Scleral lenses may be recommended even before this point, due to the fact that RGP contact lens wear has been found to be a risk factor for corneal scarring in patients with KC. 10 Scleral contact lenses are large rigid gas permeable contact lenses of diameter of up to 23,11 which rest on the sclera of the eye and cover the cornea of the eye like a dome lid.…”
