Undoubtedly Malaysian construction industry contributes enormously towards Malaysia's nation economic growth.Despite the significant role of the construction industry plays in the country's development and its heavy contribution towards economic growth and employment, the statistics show a high prevalence of accidents and injuries in the industry, resulting in nonpermanent or permanent disabilities, fatalities and damage or loss of property. Past research suggests that on-site construction accidents can be prevented by identifying the root causes, thereby making such predictions based on knowledge and resources on accident causation possible. The aim of this study is to develop an Accident Causation for Accident Prevention (ACfAP) model for key management parties at Malaysia building construction sites. At this stage, this paper will present the initial stage of study (the information gathering phase) by presents the significant groups of accident causations factors for accident prevention. In overall, this ongoing research will be divided into three phases; (i) the information gathering phase;; (ii) the model development phase; and (iii) the model analysis phase. First, previous studies on safety, accident causation and prevention of accidents at construction sites are briefly reviewed from books, theses and journal articles in order to provide a global perspective on the subject. Second, a comprehensive ACfAP will be developed based on the attributes of accident causation obtained from expert surveys. Third, the hypothesised relationships are tested using partial least squares (PLS) path modelling approach. Finally the ACfAP Model for key management at building construction sites will be developed.

Analysis of the Impact of Building Shape on Safety Management Cost

Even if a building has the same building area or number of floors, the effect on construction safety varies depending on the building shape, and thus, safety management cost (SMC) should be calculated differently. If the effect of the building shape on the SMC is clearly analyzed and reflected, a reasonable SMC could be calculated. This study analyzes building shape’s impact on SMC, including apartment buildings’ impact. Following the data collection from 21 projects for this study, an analysis was conducted using the independent variables of the building perimeter (BP), building floor area (BA), and the building shape factor (BSF), and the dependent variable of SMC. As a result of analyzing the correlation between the three main factors and SMC, it was found that the BP, BSF, and BA have a very strong positive Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.876, 0.801, and 0.792, respectively. In the future, the results of this study can be used as supporting data for improving the safety management cost-related system and will develop into a more reliable model through continuous data accumulation and utility verification.

Abstract. The construction industry has been known as the most fatal industries worldwide. Accident affects varies parties involving direct and indirect costs to the contractor and clients as well. The construction safety measures in the current practice often begin during the construction phase rather than at the earliest stages possible. Design for Construction Safety (DfCS) is a process to reduce the hazards and risks during construction by focussing on design decision at the design phase. This concept implementation is new and has yet to be adapted worldwide. With every new culture comes with a set of list to overcome. The top barriers stated by past researchers are lack of knowledge and education followed by increased of liability and the nature of the industry. The initial step to be taken is to adapt this concept in the universities and college level during the designers' formal education. By mastering this subject, the designers will become more confidence with new found skills while their attitudes towards safety will have a huge impact on workforce safety by eliminating hazards on site.
