Contudo, quando o diagnóstico é realizado tardiamente ou quando a pessoa convive com a doença, porém não sabe, aumentam-se as chances de complicações, uma vez que a falta de insulina ou a incapacidade da insulina para exercer adequadamente seus efeitos favorecem a mudança do metabolismo da pessoa trazendo como consequências a hiperglicemia dentre outras alterações (19) .
