Confirming the factor structure of the alcohol and alcohol problems questionnaire (AAPPQ) in a sample of baccalaureate nursing students

Abstract: The Alcohol and Alcohol Problems Perception Questionnaire (AAPPQ) is a multi-dimensional measure of clinicians' attitudes toward working with patients with alcohol problems. In the past 35 years, five- and six-subscale versions and a short version of the AAPPQ have been published. While the reliability of the AAPPQ subscales has remained acceptable, the factor structure has not been verified using confirmatory techniques. In the current study, we split a sample of 299 baccalaureate nursing students to use expl… Show more

“…Venkat et al () developed the SAP based on two instruments, the Alcohol and Alcohol Problem Perceptions Questionnaire (AAPPQ) and the Drug and Drug Problem Perceptions Questionnaire (DDPPQ). These two instruments are valid and reliable with high construct and content validity (Cartwright, ; Terhorst et al, ; Watson, Maclaren, & Kerr, ). The SAP is a subset of questions from the AAPPQ and the DDPPQ used to measure changes in core knowledge, perceived competence, and perceptions and attitudes in health professional trainees.…”

The SAP is a subset of questions from the AAPPQ and the DDPPQ used to measure changes in core knowledge, per- Process evaluation interviews via telephone were also conducted with students who consented to the research.…”

“…The AAPPQ is an instrument adapted and validated in English (United Kingdom) that was developed to evaluate the Model of Therapeutic Commitment (21) . In this model, the therapeutic attitudes and bonding with users (of alcohol or other drugs) are influenced by: feeling of being prepared to adequately perform the care role, called "role adequacy"; extent to which individuals consider work as their responsibility ("role legitimacy"); and the support that practitioners recognize they receive from peers in order to help them play their role effectively ("support").…”

In this instrument, subscales were designed to evaluate the aforementioned model, which explains the attitudes regarding work with alcohol users: adequacy in function; role legitimacy; support; motivation; self-esteem; and satisfaction with working with these users (21)(22) .…”

“…O trabalho ocorreu com 229 estudantes de uma universidade americana e faz parte de uma análise secundária de um programa de treinamento de 13 horas para educação a estudantes sobre o uso de álcool. Os dados foram coletados antes e após o treino e, como resultados, além dos ajustes do questionário (redução de itens), a aplicação nos estudantes revelou que a amostra teve pouca oportunidade para trabalhar com pacientes que usam álcool (TERHORST et al, 2013).…”
